Sales of Metalite Products to the US Air Force at Kirkuk
Metalite completed an extensive order (over 150 units) for the supply of its battery powered runway edge lights (COREL) and uni-directional approach lights (UAL) for the US Air Force at Kirkuk Air Base in 2003.
Its products are being used to support visual and NVG flight operations on the bases two runways for fixed and rotary wing aircraft. All of the products were supplied with radio control facility for control of the light units from either the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower at a range of up to 4 kms or from an operator on the airfield itself.
The COREL and UAL have a visibility of approximately 10 miles under good VFR nighttime conditions and can support IFR operations down to visibility of ½ a mile in accordance with NATO requirements. The products also meet FAA and ICAO requirements unlike other products such as solar powered lighting where light intensity is low and power source dictated by local weather conditions.
Metalite's range of battery powered airfield lighting is highly mobile and easy to deploy. This can be very beneficial when setting up a temporary or permanent airfield lighting system on a runway with no power and damaged facilities. When parts of the airfield are under repair the lights can be removed quickly and then replaced once engineering work has been completed without the need for connecting to an external power source such as a generator or installing into place on the runway or taxiway.
Both the COREL and UAL have battery indication on each unit to advise the operator the status of the battery capacity during recharging and also once deployed on a runway. Both products can last for up to 16 hours continuously on a visible setting and over three days when used on radio control. Recharging of these units will take between 8 and 9 hours depending upon the discharge capacity of the batteries.
The order for Kirkuk Air Base was the most recent of orders after Metalite had completed contracts for the US Air Force in Oman, Afghanistan, Qatar and now Iraq.
