Metalite Aviation Lighting

Metalite's military products being used in Iraq feature in UK TV programme

The recent “Airbase” programme by ITV in the UK followed the C-130 Hercules fleet based out of RAF Lyneham during operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. In the last programme of the series, the programme followed a RAF C-130J flying into Iraq under NVG conditions to land at a US Marine Corps expeditionary airfield 70kms south of Baghdad. The programme showed the airfield under NVG conditions and gave the pilot's view as the C-130J was landing at the expeditionary airfield using MOSKIT and SALKIT portable airfield lighting systems. From the TV footage a complete airfield was delineated including taxiways, parking aprons and helicopter landing areas.

MOSKIT and SALKIT are used by the USMC under the name MOSLS (Minimum Operating Strip Lighting System) and using a combination of these two types of trailer, the USMC can operate a runway with dual approach and also delineate taxiways and other areas of the airfield. MOSLS was heavily used during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom by the USMC and also by the UK RAF to light runways and helipads around Southern Iraq and Afghanistan.

MOSKIT can be deployed in under 20 minutes by three personnel to light a 1500 mtr (5,000ft) Minimum Operating Strip. In under an hour an expeditionary airfield including taxiways and parking aprons can be delineated with the addition of SALKIT trailers.

MOSKIT is in use with fifteen different armed services in fourteen countries around the world and is the leading portable airfield lighting system in the world.

For interested military users, Metalite can offer a free demonstration and trial of a MOSKIT in the users country, where flight trials can be undertaken with the support of Metalite and RAF personnel. For more information contact us on info@metalite-aviation.com.
